Type
The Semi Rijo is a whiteish limestone, calciclastic to oolitic, abundantly bioclastic. The exploited beds probably belong to the lower layers of the Moleanos Formation, which is included in the Limestone Massif of Estremadura (Mesocenozoic Occidental Border). The geological age of this Formation is Lower Callovian (Middle Jurassic).
Appearance
The Semi Rijo has a white colour, thin to medium grain and uniform background. It is a soft natural stone in terms of hardness. It is also known as Semi-Rijo do Arrimal, Salgueira and Branco do Mar.
Location
The Semi Rijo limestone is explored around the area of Arrimal – Porto de Mós, which is located in Serra D´Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. This area is located in the centre of Portugal, about 100 kilometres north of Lisbon.
Arrimal lies in the centre of Serra D´Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park, which is included in the ring of limestone extraction area – also known as the main ornamental limestone quarrying centre in Portugal. |
